How Does Tutoring Work, Exactly?

At the AATC, we offer a variety of drop-in and individual tutoring services to the campus community. Tutoring always begins during Week 2 of the quarter. Tutor FAQs

  • What should I do if I have to miss a shift?
  • If you will be absent for a shift, please let us know ASAP by submitting an absence form in the Tutor Portal. After that, follow the instructions in the Guide to Hybrid Tutoring to complete additional steps depending on which type of shift you are missing.
  • To reschedule an individual tutoring appointment, how far in advance must the reschedule request form be submitted?
  • A reschedule request form be submitted 24 hours before the reschedule date to ensure the AATC staff has time to process the request.
  • I want to tutor more courses. Do I have to reapply every time?
  • No, once you are hired you can add courses that you'd like to tutor at any time in the Tutor Portal, with the exception of Writing courses (i.e., if you would like to tutor Writing and you were hired for a STEM subject, you must apply to be a Writing tutor. However, Writing tutors can add STEM subjects if they would like). Please see the Guide to the Tutor Portal for steps on how to add courses.
  • What kinds of shifts could I be assigned to? Do I get to choose my own shifts?
  • The Tutor Management Team will assign you shifts based on your availability and our need for coverage in certain areas. For example, if you tutor any drop-in subjects and have available hours during most afternoons, you may be scheduled for drop-in tutoring shifts in Shields or the TLC (depending on which subject you tutor).
  • How do I fill out my timesheets?
  • Please check out A Tutor's Guide to Timesheets for step-by-step instructions on how to complete biweekly Portal and TRS timesheets.
  • Do I have to work during finals week?
  • No, your tutoring appointments and shifts automatically end during week 10 of the quarter. You will only work during finals week if you signed up to do so.
  • My question isn't answered here. Where else can I go?
  • Please check out the AATC Current Tutors FAQ Document for more FAQs + answers!
